Local student receives Cobb EMC’s Walter Harrison Scholarship

Walter Harrison Scholarship

Cobb EMC and the Walter Harrison Scholarship selection committees are proud to announce that Evani Patel, a student at Kennesaw Mountain High School, has been named one of the 12 recipients for 2020. Recipients were chosen based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities and their service to the community.

“We are glad to help support Evani’s dream to study in the field of medical research and health care,” said Mark Justice, Director of Education and Community Relations at Cobb EMC. “She has exhibited a passion for knowledge which she plans to explore at Georgia Tech.”

Earlier this year, Patel competed against 75 other students from across Georgia who applied for the scholarship, which provides $1,000 to help offset costs associated with obtaining a college degree. Applicants were required to submit a brief essay explaining why they would be good candidates for the scholarship. School performance, grade point average, SAT/ACT scores, scholastic honors, and a commitment to serve others were all factors that led the selection committee to make their decision.

The scholarship, created in 1985, is named in honor of Walter Harrison, a pioneer in the rural electricity movement and a leader in electric cooperative programs. It is funded by Georgia’s 41 electric cooperatives, including Cobb EMC.
