Local father wins makeover

Cobb EMC and Gas South, in partnership with the Cobb Heating and Air Conditioning Association, awarded local father and Cobb EMC member William Baxter with a Home Energy Efficiency Makeover to help his household save on energy-related expenses.

“Our community’s response to this year’s event was overwhelming,” said Leslie Thompson, director of member and public relations at Cobb EMC. “More than 200 applications poured in with stories of deserving neighbors, families and friends. We’re proud to partner with other community-focused businesses to help make a difference for the Baxter family.”

Baxter, who was nominated by his sister Cheryl Ellis, lives in Powder Springs with his wife, two children and two grandchildren. After suffering a stroke while at work in early 2016, Baxter fought for his life and went on to survive additional strokes while on the operating table, a respiratory infection, blood clots in his lungs, congestive heart failure and pneumonia.

When asked to describe her brother, Ellis said, “He is a very outgoing man with a heart of gold. Being confined was very difficult for him. He would always be the first one there to help anyone he could. He was giving of his time and did anything he could for charities and fundraising.”

Ellis was there to unveil her brother’s home makeover, along with representatives from the event’s sponsors. This year’s makeover included a variety of home energy improvements including new energy-efficient appliances, a bill credit from Cobb EMC, two years of free natural gas from Gas South, a new low-flow toilet and fixtures from the Cobb County Water System, and a new HVAC unit, insulation, smart thermostat, and other energy efficiency improvements from members of the Cobb Heating and Air Conditioning Association.

“William is truly an inspiration to community members and I hope that winning this home energy efficiency makeover will provide him and his family with cost savings because of new, efficient appliances and two years of free natural gas,” said Kevin Greiner, Gas South president and CEO. “It’s great to partner with our parent company, Cobb EMC, and the Cobb Heating and Air Association to make a difference in the communities where we live and work.”
