5 Energy-Saving Myths, Busted

5 Energy-Saving Myths, Busted

It’s officially summer which means long, hot days and worrying about the cost of your electric bill. We understand that every penny counts, so we’re here to bust a few of the most common energy-saving myths.

1. Turning appliances off eliminates their energy use.

While this will help cut down your energy usage, it won’t eliminate it. Electricity is still drawn from appliances that are left plugged in. The only way for an appliance to not use any energy is to unplug them from the outlet completely.

2. Lowering my thermostat will cool my home quicker.

HVAC systems always operate at the same speed, no matter the temperature setting. Lowering or raising your thermostat can actually cause your system to run longer and use more energy. It’s better to stick to one temperature and let your house cool itself down at its regular pace.

3. Newer homes are more energy-efficient than older homes.

Energy efficiency has less to do with the age of a home and more to do with the construction and design of the home. A sturdy, well-sealed home helps keep your energy costs down.

4. Closing the vents in unused rooms will cool other rooms quicker.

HVAC systems work as a balanced system to disperse air throughout the home. Disrupting this system can cause more harm than good.

5. Dishwashers waste money and energy.

You can actually waste more energy by hand-washing your dishes, so go ahead and load up the dishwasher!

We know there are a lot of “tips and tricks” floating out there for saving energy, but a lot of them are myths. Want to know if your energy saving tip is actually a myth? Just ask us! We’re always happy to bust a myth.
